What You Can Learn From Tiger's Fall

The leadership on the PGA Tour has changed from Tiger Woods to Vijay Singh. Wow! Considering how dominate Tiger was for 4-years - nobody would’ve thought Tiger would lose his #1 ranking at this stage of his career.

What can you learn from this event?

You can learn that even the greatest player can’t play his best, every time he plays. Let’s put this into further perspective – it shows that even the greatest players, might not play their best for almost 2-years. “Who do you know that gets upset after just one round of bad golf?” And the people that get upset most likely have full-time jobs and/or families that take precedence over golf. Tiger's allowed to focus his entire life on playing golf and he still can’t always play to the best of his ability.

So can you expect to be immune from a bad golf round?

Your answer could help you become more consistent overnight! Do you start to tinker with your golf swing after 1-bad round? Do you know anyone that starts to tinker with their swing after ONE BAD SHOT? The downfall of the golfer! To think we need to fix our swing after just a few bad shots.

“Oh, what’s wrong with my swing today? I was hitting it great yesterday. Maybe if on my next swing I take the club a little more on the inside on the backswing - that might get me back on track.” “No, that backswing isn’t working. I’m still not hitting it as good as yesterday. Maybe if I just strengthen my grip a little bit, like they said on the Golf Channel last night? I’ll try that next shot.”

So now your swing thought becomes “Maybe if I…” And then when your latest “tinker” doesn’t help, what part of your swing will you “Maybe if I…” next? And a swing that was producing great shots yesterday is being “tinkered” with on every shot as you move farther and farther away from yesterday’s great swing. And as you become more frustrated and tense - your game gets progressively worse with every swing.

“It takes 1000's of swings to produce just a little bit of consistency and only 3 or 4 to wipe it out!

This is why we stress for you “to have a PLAN” every time you go to the golf course. When you have a PLAN, you stick to what you do best and you don’t become distracted by other golfers or from your own thoughts! If you use your PLAN when you play golf, you’ll become more consistent!

Maybe Tiger’s PLAN is changing?

Who knows, except for Tiger! His life is changing – he’s getting married. His time away from the PGA Tournaments isn’t as devoted to golf as it used to be. For example: we were vacationing in Vaxholm, Sweden at the end of June. And the talk of the town was Tiger was just there looking to buy a house with his fiancé. Now there's nothing wrong with this, Tiger should be allowed to enjoy himself away from golf. But, before he met his fiancé, do you think just a couple weeks before the British Open, that Tiger would’ve been house shopping halfway across the world? No, he’d be on the golf course or practice range!

Once Tiger gets his PLAN back, he’ll resume being #1. And as soon as you develop your PLAN, you’ll play more consistent!

I Developed A PLAN!
How I Went From mid-90's to the mid-80's

Marc,

I want to thank you for the wonderful time I had at your 5-Day Golf Made Simple in March and how much that improved my game. After working with you and Jacob for 5 days and taking home valuable practice drills and new course management strategies, I’m currently a 12 handicapper. I consistently shoot in my mid 80s and I’ve had a chance to break 80 twice in the last two months and just missed it by a stroke.

Before I attended, I was shooting in the mid – upper 90s and I would get frustrated because I knew I should be doing better.

Your style and method of teaching is unique and I think it makes players feel more confident about their game. For me, it took my game to a completely different level. My short game has seen the biggest improvement – as I'm making pars by getting up and down from off the green. Learning how to control my 1/2 and 3/4 swings have helped me play smarter and more consistent.

Another reason I’m scoring better is that I used to average about 260 yards off the tee and now I average about 285 yards. Those extra 25-yards help me have a shorter 2nd shot to the green.

I loved the simplicity of your teaching. You broke down-every golf shot to a very basic level. Now, since I have my Plan on the course, if I hit a bad shot, I immediately know what I did wrong and have the confidence to come back and play the next shot correctly.

I want to thank you again for a great time I had and the awesome instructions I received. I will definitely be visiting you again soon. Please also thank Jacob and Alex for a wonderful time and good luck with the academy.

How To Play The Worst Golf You Can?

Isn`t that one of the most ridiculous comments you ever heard? Well, believe it or not, golfers are constantly trying to “play the worst golf they can” everyday on the golf course. Did you ever try that yourself? You might not even know you’re trying that yourself, but you are if you say things like - "I stink! I STINK! I hate that DRIVER", or "I’ve got to be the WORST putter that ever LIVED!" Well, have you? If you haven`t, have you ever listened to another golfer say it or something resembling these self-defacing comments? Just because you might be using different words, doesn`t mean they do less harm. We all want to play our best all the time, but to play your best; you must be prepared in more ways than one!

To look in a different direction for a minute, I want to talk about practicing golf. Do you ever practice your golf game? How do you practice? The Driving Range, putting green, practice bunker, or do you putt on one of those little putting mats you can lay on the floor and the ball rolls back to you?

But, I mean do you ever practice your golf game? It’s great to practice your stroke (swing) using the above techniques, but there’s more that goes into playing your best golf and lowering your scores than just doing the above. Do you agree? Have you ever thought of improving your golf in other ways besides the above?

Ok, what other ways can you improve your golf game? Well, an understandable choice is mental training. You hear a lot about that now especially with Dr. Bob Rotella writing 2-books that sold well. How about physical training? We can credit Tiger for bringing that to the forefront, even though Gary Player has been preaching it for over 30 years. Come on; think of one more way to improve.

I am going to tell you what I feel is the best way for you to practice – it’s to practice golf - meaning learn how to challenge yourself to get to the next level, practice handling the pressure, use practice drills to stat yourself, and do it all as practice your stroke (swing). Great golfers do more than just practice their stroke when they want to improve their golf.

“OK players practice their swing with limited results - Great Players improve their swing using Practice Techniques that simulate being on the golf course!”

For example what do you see when other golfers practice their putting? Most golfers I see throw 3-balls on the putting green and then putt them to a hole. If they miss on the first putt, they try to knock them in the hole on the second one and then go to the next hole. What does that do for your golf game? The only knowledge you get out of "practicing" this way is that you learn the speed of that particular green.

This is how I help golfers like you to improve your golf game - I use a putting game that I call the Tour Putting Square that I learned from Dr. Rick Jensen. When you practice using this game, you will become a mentally tough putter. And I say tough because the best putters are mentally tough - Tiger, Jack Nicklaus, Nancy Lopez, Arnold Palmer are the toughest putters that have ever lived. They don’t get nervous and in fact are confident in their abilities when facing an important putt that could change their lives or set aside another spot for them in the record books.

Here is how you can set-up the Tour Putting Square -

· Find a hole that has an uphill, downhill, left to right, and right to left putt

· Place a tee 3` from the hole for each of the above putts

· You need to make 3-putts in a row from each tee

· Every time you miss, add 1-point to your score, but you must make 3 in a row to move to the next tee

· Once you get around the Putting Square, move each tee 1` back and continue around

· After you complete the Putting Square from 4`, move each tee back another foot

· You must make 3 in a row at each tee from 3`, 4`, and 5`, count your misses

· The scores below are the actual scores from golfers in their respective categories

1. PGA Tour Pro - 0 to 3 misses

2. Nationwide Tour Pro - 4 to 6 misses

3. College Player - 8 to 15 misses

4. 10 Handicap - 18 to 25 misses

If you want to improve your golf, if you want to play more consistent, you need to practice using Practice Techniques like the Tour Putting Square. At Hampton Golf Academy we use Practice Techniques for every part of your game. If you’re a 20-handicap, a competitive person and like to challenge yourself, you should see how we’ll improve your scores by having you become tough in areas like your Wedge game from 50-yards to the green and in. And the reason you can do this is because you will be learning how to practice better as you learn the proper techniques for your game.

If you want to become a better golfer, don`t just practice your stroke (swing); use Practice Techniques to improve your game!

What Woods Should I Buy?

Hi Jacob,

This is D.W.... you gave me lessons on Mother's Day weekend...I'm the lady from Ohio.

My game has improved since taking lessons, and if I keep remembering your instructions to ACCELERATE THROUGH THE SWING...it helps a lot, especially for those short shots to the green.

Anyway I'm going to upgrade my woods per your recommendation. So I would appreciate some input on the best choice for me:

1. I've hit the Lady Cobra 400 SZ, the new club for this year,
and it seems to be pretty good. However hitting at those
golf shop simulators just doesn't get it done for how the
club really performs.

2. The Calloway Fusion (ERC) was also recommended to me
but they don't carry it in stock...so I've been unable to make any evaluation.

I've spoken to the golf guys at the shop, and they say most ladies like the Cobra. But I've also heard good things about the Calloway. So, I’m not sure what to do!

Since I want to upgrade to the best clubs at this time, I've kept my last woods for around 8 years, I'd appreciate any input or recommendations from you.

I plan to purchase a new driver, 5 & 7 woods. I'll hold off on the 3 wood until a later time. I want to make a decision by Monday.

Hope to hear from you soon.

Take Care....D.W.

Jacob wrote back to D.W. with his recommendations and she responded back a week later with this email.

Hi Jacob,

Based on your recommendations, I decided to buy the “xxxxx” woods. I shot a 90 last week which was the best I played this year and then yesterday I won low net for the Club Championship Tournament for Class A, and also this past week, I won low net for another tournament!

Thanks for your help and such good feedback. Hope you survived Hurricane "Charlie".

Take care....Diane Wojod
