At Least We Have Golf!
Click Here To Listen to The Audio Version of Golf Improvement Weekly
The golf course may be the one place that we can all congregate and be on the same side supporting to each other after bad shots and cheering one another after fabulous drives. It's the place that a Democrat can give a pat on the back to a Republican and a Republican can high-5 a Democrat. It's the place that Conservatives can say Alright, awesome shot that was fantastic to a Liberal and a Liberal can say "it was a pleasure to play with you" to a Conservative.
On the golf course it's all for one and one for all' enjoyable golf is a bipartisan initiative.
On the golf course - political views are often not exchanged. The talk is about golf and being around people you enjoy. It's the one place that we're all supporting the same agenda the search for consistency on the golf course'. And when a Golfer that's been struggling all day finally hits a good golf shot: we all get excited for that person regardless of political party, skin color, religious background or even if they live in New Jersey - and that's the way it should be. The golf course is the Green Zone it's the place where we can get away from all the nonsense.
Sure, you might be unlucky every-once-in-a-while to get stuck with a jerk but that's just the way it is. The good people that you meet and the friendships that you create far out-weigh the occasional annoying Golfer you're stuck with for 18 holes.
Whenever I open up the newspaper all I read about is war
Whenever I switch-on the television all I see is Democrats hating Republicans and Republicans hating Democrats
At least we have Golf'
Whenever I turn on the radio all I hear is that we're going from recession into depression
And whenever my computer finally comes up and Internet Explorer goes to Yahoo all the intellectual chatter is about Brittany Spears or Paris Hilton
At least we have Golf'
Have you ever played 9-holes and walked into the clubhouse before going onto #10; passed through the bar area where the television has some sort of news on? Have you ever felt the shock of coming back into the real world after spending 2 utopian hours on the golf course with nothing to think about besides golf and friendship?
Being able to focus on your golf game for 18 holes (4 hours or so) without talk of bail-outs or Vice Presidential candidates or political emails putting the other-side down being able to get away for 18 holes may be more important now than I can ever remember. Well, at least for me it is. During these tense times let golf be your outlet to get away from it all. This maybe the one time that if the pace of play is slow it may be a blessing in disguise!
In this time of many questions the tendency is for people to stay away from the golf course. It's my belief that in these times you should spend a little more time at the golf course. Get away from everything that's out there and get back to what makes you happy.
One side says we shouldn't be there the other side says we need to be there
One side says that it's their fault we're in this mess the other side says it's not us, it's you
At least we have Golf'
One side says we need a bail-out the other side says don't give away my money
And I don't give a rat's butt about Brittany Spears or Paris Hilton!
At least we have Golf'
In these uncertain times when many people are worried about tomorrow let alone next week or next month or next year
At least you have Golf.
In these times where many people are scared for their money and nervous about their jobs and worried about who's going to be the next President
At least you have Golf
And tonight (October 2nd, 2008), during the Vice Presidential Debate with a 100 million people watching here in the US and probably millions more in other countries around the world when you hear either of the candidates give an answer that you disagree with, don't get upset, don't let it affect your blood pressure, don't say anything hateful just roll your eyes, rotate your head from side to side and look at whoever's in the room with you and say: At least we have Golf'.
Then wake-up Friday morning, ditch work and get in 18 holes!
The Monkey gets sucked into the sky is falling' philosophy
The Player tees it up!
Go ahead, Be a Player!

"My First Hole-in-One!"
Hi Hayden,
Good news:
I'm having very little trouble getting out of the sand since our last conversation. In fact, I've had a few sand saves over the last half of the season and more importantly, I've got confidence in my ability.
Saturday, Sept 20, I shot a 95 which was my second lowest score of the season. I actually used driver, 6 iron, 6 iron on a 537 yard par 5 and went onto the fringe on the back of the green. On another Par 5 of 520 yards, I was on in 3.
6 months ago before GMS, I would have been in shock at these - but now --- it's getting better.
Anyway, I had 4 pars ---- AND --------------- My first Hole in One!!!!!
6 iron, 140 yds from the center - pin back - unreal experience. Still in shock!!
Thanks for all your guidance.
Best regards,

"I Broke 90!"
Marc,
I attended GMS in California a year and a half ago. This last month, the thought pattern and the same repeating swing paid off. Low 90's consistently, drives that found the fairway consistently, and chips that were consistently on the green.
Yesterday, I broke 90, with one birdie, and 5 pars. I accomplished this on a course I had never played. The scorecard didn't have a whole layout so most of the shots I hit were somewhat blind since I really didn't know how the hole was set up.
Just focused on hitting the ball square with the same swing time after time. Not thinking about anything except tick tock
Thanks,

The Instructor For Life Bulletin
The Buzz this week will be the Buzz next week when all our GMS Alumni will receive the inaugural issue of The Instructor For Life Bulletin. The Bulletin is just the first step of many to beef-up our Instructor For Life program to new heights. The Instructor For Life Bulletin will focus on even more approaches directly related to the 2 or 3-day GMS on-site experience than we're able to provide in Golf Improvement Weekly.
Since GIW is read by Golfers from all over the world, many of which haven't attended a GMS Program, we can't get into as much detail as we'd like in GIW. The Instructor For Life Bulletin will allow us to do this for our GMS Alumni.
Starting next week and continuing once a month The Instructor For Life Bulletin will include such items as:
A column by Marc Solomon dedicated solely to GMS Alumni.
Golf Made Simple strategies by the Director of the Instructor For Life Program.
A section that will be dedicated to specials for GMS Alumni to return to GMS.
Along with a few more surprises that I'm sure you're going to enjoy; such as further enhancements to the GMS Instructor For Life Program.
You'll continue to receive Golf Improvement Weekly each week (which will be moving to a Tuesday distribution) though starting next week, on the 2nd Thursday of each month, all GMS Alumni will receive The GMS Instructor For Life Bulletin.

"Sergio, What Are You Doing?"
At last week's PGA Tour Championship in Atlanta, Camilo Villegas beat Sergio Garcio on the first playoff hole to win the championship and a good chunk of cash. And as many Golfers have said "Sergio should've won the tournament after the 72nd hole. If Sergio could've just hit a couple of more fairways during the last round, there wouldn't have even been a playoff."
Yet, the stats tell a slightly different story. Sergio was 5 shots ahead of Camilo going into the last round, but only hit 8 out of 14 fairways to score a 1 over par 71 to Camilo's 4 under par 66. Though, Sergio did hit 13 out of the 18 Greens in Regulation a pretty good number and only 1 less green than Camilo.
With Sergio hitting that many Greens in Regulation it shows that the true problem wasn't missing fairways. The true issue might be that Sergio had 32 putts to Camilo's 29 putts. And Sergio averaging an awful (for a PGA Tour Player) 1.9 putts per green in regulation to Camilo's 1.5. This most likely had more influence on Sergio making 'only' 2 Birdies in the final round to Camilo's 8 Birdies and was the main difference in Camilo's 6 shot comeback in Round 4.

'Good Streaks & Bad Streaks On The Golf Course'
An Excerpt from Golf Improvement Weekly Classic Issue 228 February 13th, 2008
"If there's one trait that the most successful Players have, it's coming back after a bad hole. Often times the biggest disappointment a frustrated Golfer can have is a 'good streak' of 4 or 5 holes followed by the infamous triple bogey.
Every Golfer in the world is going to experience a triple bogey every-once-in-a-while it's just part of the game. The difference is whether you bounce back to a 'good streak' or you let a triple bogey become the entry point for a 'bad streak'.
I believe how the losers of the Super Bowl (in American Football) come back from a disappointing loss is a great analogy to how you may or may not come back from a triple bogey on the golf course. There are certain Football coaches that you know will bring their team back ready to play great the next year after a disappointing loss in front of millions of people. And there are coaches that won't be able to bring their team back starting what may be a 'bad streak' for the team.
Let's start in recent history: The Giants just beat the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl. To many followers of American Football, it was a major surprise (except to some Giant fans I know). The question now remains will the Patriots be a successful team next season or will they fall like so many Super Bowl losers have in the past?"
